Sensei Tony Penna is the head instructor and owner of the Extreme Karate dojo in Southington, CT.  He has been studying Shorinryu Karatedo since 1980 and is a direct student of Grandmaster Eizo Shimabukuro.   Having made several trips to Okinawa for continued study and hosting trips for his teacher to the United States, Sensei Penna has worked hard to understand the traditional teachings of Grandmaster Eizo Shimabukuro.  With credentials in Shorinryu Karatedo, Toei-ryu Jujutsu and Kobudo, O’Sensei Shimabukuro has entrusted Sensei Penna with helping to preserve his lineage.

  • Over 25 years of experience teaching children as young as three, adults of all ages and all those in between

  • Certified Instructor under Grandmaster Eizo Shimabukuro
  • Over 20 years experience teaching for local YMCA programs
  • Sought after school enrichment program instructor locally and in neighboring towns
  • Self defense instructor for local prominent private academy
  • Avid tournament competitor, referee and team coach with hundreds of awards and former top ten national status in weapons, kata, point sparring and continuous sparring.

My Personal Motivation:

“I love doing this.  If I can’t keep a student training in the dojo by giving my best to them at each class and showing a genuine interest in their progression, then I will eventually have to pick another profession!”

Our Senpai (senior students) at the dojo assist with the teaching in classes where necessary.  We always have multiple senior students on the mat.  Whether they join in with the training to set the example or help with the step by step learning process, they are always willing to lend a hand.
